Public Shelters in Tel Aviv: Finding a Safe Room Near You
When there is a siren, the most important thing is that the shelter is close. Not big, not fancy, just close. Here you can find public protected spaces in Tel Aviv and know in advance where to run with the children.
What Exactly Is a Protected Space?
A protected space (also called "miklat" or "mamad") is a room or area in a public facility designed to protect civilians in emergencies. These spaces are built to specific protection standards and include access to first aid and rescue equipment.
In Tel Aviv, as in other Israeli cities, public protected spaces are found in:
- Community centres and cultural halls
- Schools and kindergartens
- Sports facilities and public amenities
- Municipal institutions and government offices
How Much Time Is There to Reach the Shelter?
During a rocket or missile alert, the early warning time is typically 90 seconds. To reach a protected space safely with young children, it must be within roughly 1-2 minutes' walk from where you are.
How to Find a Nearby Shelter on TLV Parents
TLV Parents displays protected space data from Tel Aviv Municipality on an interactive map. You can:
- Tap "Near me" to centre the map on your home or workplace
- Enable the "Public Shelters" layer from the menu
- Each shelter appears as a distinct point on the map
- Tap a shelter to see its exact address and distance
Practical tip: identify the 2-3 nearest protected spaces and know where they are as you pass them on the street. In an emergency, you cannot rely on a smartphone.
Filtering Playgrounds by Proximity to a Shelter
Children need to play, but playing near a shelter means playing more safely. On TLV Parents you can filter playgrounds that are located near a public protected space.
A playground within 50-100 metres of a protected space means you can reach cover within seconds, making outings with toddlers safer during periods of elevated threat.
Preparing a Family with Young Children
Reaching a protected space with young children requires planning:
- Know where the nearest shelter is: so you do not have to search in real time
- Check the entrance in advance: Is it accessible at all hours? Are there stairs or a lift?
- Prepare a small bag: water, snacks, quiet toys and nappies for babies
- Talk to your child: for children who understand, explain simply why you sometimes need to enter a protected space
Not Only in Emergencies
You do not need a siren to know where the nearest shelter is. It is simply useful knowledge to have, like knowing where the nearest hospital is or where there is parking.
At TLV Parents we included protected spaces on the same map used for finding a playground or a kindergarten, because all these decisions relate to where you live.
Data Sources
The data comes from Tel Aviv Municipality's open data repository. If something looks out of date, you can call 106 (the municipality's service line) or check directly on the municipality's website.
